Nitrates and Sildenafil: Drugs That Shouldn’t Go Together

Before taking medicines, a person should first know if the drug is compatible with them. They should also know if the drug is compatible with the other medications that they are taking, to avoid any chemical reactions that could otherwise be dangerous to the health. This makes doctor consultations precious as medical professionals have the knowledge and the expertise concerning health, illnesses and the medications to treat them. So if a patient receives instructions and advice from a doctor with regards to their condition and their treatment, they should follow it strictly to be on their way to recovery.

What is a Nitrate Drug?

Nitrates are drugs that are used for patients with angina pectoris or heart pains.

These pains are caused by the insufficient oxygen that the heart muscles receive from the blood which is caused by the inadequate amounts of blood that circulate back to the heart. To relieve the pains experienced by the patient, Nitrates work by dilating the narrow blood vessels that make blood circulation difficult. This action will now make blood circulation easier and it will also reduce the stress in the heart’s muscles for pumping the blood harder. The dilation of the blood vessels will now allow sufficient amounts of blood to flow to the heart supplying its muscles with the much-needed oxygen.

Sildenafil, on the other hand, is a medicine for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It is also called a PDE 5 inhibitor drug that works just the same as Nitrates but not towards relieving angina pectoris. Sildenafil also dilates the blood vessels in the body to improve the blood circulation. This will now allow larger amounts of blood to flow to the penis which will help it achieve an erection. Sildenafil does not cause the erection by itself but it still needs the patient to be sexually aroused so that the drug will respond accordingly to what the body does.

The effects of Sildenafil are also perfect for treating pulmonary hypertension, a condition which is caused by the arteries that have become narrow making blood flow to the lungs difficult. Sildenafil dilates these rigid arteries that hinder the proper blood flow in the pulmonary arteries, providing the patient relief. In this condition, the heart also gets overworked from pumping the blood into the narrow arteries causing its enlargement and palpitating heartbeats. The person also becomes weak for not having sufficient amounts of blood flow to their lungs, meaning their lungs don’t get its much-needed oxygen from the blood.

How Long After Nitroglycerin Can You Take Viagra?

Taking both of these drugs at the same time is not recommended. If the patient has the symptoms of angina pectoris while at the same time needing to take Sildenafil for their ED, the patient should just choose one drug to take. Either it’s the Sildenafil or the Nitroglycerin and both cannot go together. The reason for this is because both drugs have the same effect as vasodilators. If both drugs are taken at the same time, there will be serious repercussions to the patient’s health.

The tendency of these drugs is to combine their effects which makes the dilation of the blood vessels greater and more than what the body can handle. What happens when Nitrates and Sildenafil go together is that the blood pressure will drop to very dangerous levels which means that there will be not much blood pressure left in the body. Without the right amounts of blood pressure, the blood will have difficulties in circulating back to the heart which might cause a heart attack. The dilation of the blood vessels is only good up to a certain point but too much of it could be fatal. The safest time for taking Viagra after nitrates or nitrates after Viagra is 24 hours to make sure that the drug has already cleared the system and the other can be safely taken.

Cialis and Nitrates

Cialis is a brand name of the drug Tadalafil, manufactured by Eli Lilly and Company.

Tadalafil is also a drug used for treating erectile dysfunction and a prostate disease called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Just like Sildenafil, Tadalafil also works as a PDE 5 inhibitor, relaxing the muscles around the blood vessels to dilate them and improve the blood circulation. The only difference between Sildenafil and Tadalafil is their length or duration of effect. If Sildenafil lasts for 4 to 5 hours, Tadalafil’s effects are for much longer lasting 36 hours.

Nitrates are also not to be taken with this drug because it will have the same serious effect in the body just like when it’s combined with Sildenafil. Taking Cialis and Nitrate drugs together causes hypotension, a dangerous dip in the blood pressure that may result in a heart failure. Twenty-four hours is the recommended interval in between taking these drugs to avoid serious health risks.

Patients are to always consult their doctors first before deciding to take specific drugs for their condition. Medically unsupervised treatments are usually unsuccessful and make the symptoms worse instead of better. For the patient’s well-being, the doctors should have a complete knowledge of the patient’s medical history so based on that, they will be able to recommend an effective method of treatment. Nitrates and Sildenafil can still be used by a patient who has angina pectoris at the same time with their erectile dysfunction just as long as these drugs are not taken both at the same time. The recommended interval of time in between taking these drugs is 24 hours to make sure that their effects will not stack up. Tadalafil is also not to be taken with Nitrates since this drug can also have dangerous effects if taken together.
